DESRON 14 INSPECTS MAYPORT DIVISON SEA CADETS
Story and photos
by INST LeAnna Boudreaux, USNSCC, Mayport Division
Saturday, March 10th was the date of
the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Mayport Division’s Annual Inspection. The inspection was conducted by LTCMDR June Tillet,
Regional Director of the USNSCC, LT Sue Lounsberry, CO of the Mayport Division Sea Cadets, CPT Francis Floyd, USN Ret., and
CPT Lange Reese, USN, Commodore of DESRON 14. Each year an invitation is extended to a high-ranking, Active Duty Naval Personnel
to participate in the inspection of the cadets. Last year the honor went to the CO of the Navy’s Mayport base.
The inspection is conducted in the same manner
as naval personnel inspections. The unit falls into formation and is inspected one row at a time to consist of face-to-face
questions, uniform inspection and grooming inspection. The cadets are held to the same high standards as the Navy. When the
inspection is completed, the inspection team confers and chooses one cadet from the Sea Cadets and one cadet from the Navy
League Cadets as the most outstanding. These cadets are brought forward and presented with an award that usually consists
of a coin from one of the ships.
This year’s coins were donated by Chief
Brett Vaughan, USN, who is a member of the Mayport Division Staff. Chief Vaughan was recently appointed to the Blue Angels
in Pensacola,
Florida and returned on leave to participate in the inspection. He brought some Blue Angel
coins for the Unit’s Ship Store. The most outstanding Sea Cadet was Cadet Daniel Van Alstyne. The most outstanding Navy
League cadet was Cadet Natalie Schweikert, LPO for the Navy League cadets.
