Mayport Sea Cadets reach out to the community

Story and photos by Instructor LeAnna Boudreaux, USNSCC Mayport Division

If you watch FirstCoast News on channels 12 and 25, then you’ve heard of Jeanie Blaylock’s “Buddy Bear” program. It was during a newscast a couple of months ago that US Naval Sea Cadet Corps Cadet Drake Tola first heard of the program. His heart went out to the cancer patients that the program helps and he wanted to do something to get involved. He approached his commanding officer, LT Sue Lounsberry and presented the idea to her. She then presented it to the adult staff and all agreed that it would be a wonderful community service project for the entire unit.

Instructor LeAnna Boudreaux, Assistant Public Affairs Officer, coordinated the effort and during the next three drills, February 3rd & 24th and March 10th, the cadets held a bear drive for the project. They collected close to 100 bears and stuffed animals.
